Sheker Bayram, or the festival of sweets, symbolizes the end of the month of Ramadan during which Muslims observe a strict fast. In Turkey there are 3 days of public holidays for Bayram but this year Turkish residents will stay at home for 4 days, from May 23 to May 26 due to the coronavirus pandemic. During the holiday it is customary to gather the whole family, go to visit relatives, friends and neighbors.
On the eve of the holiday women clean the house and prepare an incredible variety of dishes. First of all sweets are served on the table (candy, baklava, Turkish delight, cookies in sweet syrup, and others), people give and exchange it. The table in every Turkish family on these holidays is full with the dishes – there is lamb with spices, steamed bread, all kinds of pies and cookies. All those who have purchased real estate in Turkey and live here permanently have enjoyed already the traditions of this wonderful celebration.
